A violinist. An art museum. And approximately a million gorgeous backdrops to choose from. SIGN ME UP. 🎻
Emily is a freelance violinist in DC, and we spent her portrait session exploring both wings of the National Gallery of Art, violin in hand! If you’ve never been to the NGA, first of all, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?! It’s one of my favorite places for portraits because the light, architecture, and artwork make every corner feel like a completely different setting.
As a DC portrait photographer, I’m always looking for locations that offer variety and inspiration, and the National Gallery of Art delivers on BOTH. You can go from beautiful natural light to dramatic architecture to the most incredible art, all without having to travel between locations. It’s basically a photographer’s playground.
And photographing Emily with her violin in a space surrounded by so much creativity? Such a good combination. I love when a portrait session gets to incorporate something that is such a big part of someone’s life. These aren’t just portraits of Emily. They’re portraits of Emily doing something she loves, in a place that inspires me every single time I’m there.
A little behind-the-scenes tip: permits aren’t required for portrait photography on the NGA campus, but props aren’t generally allowed. So if you’re hoping to bring something along, it never hurts to ask nicely and be respectful of the museum staff and visitors. 😉
Honestly, I could spend ALL DAY photographing at the National Gallery of Art. The possibilities are endless, and I’m already dreaming up my next session there!
If you’re a musician, artist, or creative looking for a portrait photographer in Washington, DC, this is your reminder that your portraits can be about more than just having your picture taken. Bring a little piece of what makes you YOU. (Just maybe check the museum’s rules first. 😂)
